Methodology

How the Rate Barometer calculates

Always verify sample wages, charges and business costs with your payroll office and accountant.

How this page calculates

Every price on this page can be traced back through this chain:

  1. Official sourceThe Federal Public Service Employment, Labour and Social Dialogue publishes the wage scales.
  2. Dataset versionEvery publication gets a fixed version with a checksum; older versions are kept.
  3. Job categoryYou choose category A through F according to the official classification.
  4. SeniorityYour years in the same qualification and with the same employer determine the wage band.
  5. Official minimum rateThe exact, published gross hourly wage for that category and band.
  6. Your business assumptionsYou set employer charges, overhead, billable time and margin yourself.
  7. Calculation by WerfvoltThe formulas combine the official floor and your assumptions into your indicative client rate.

The official job title is the legal name from the source table and stays in Dutch or French. Werfvolt adds a translated explanation but never changes the official name.

Official sector data Business assumptions Calculated by Werfvolt

Formulas

gross hourly wage + employer charges + fixed employee costs = employer cost per paid hour

(annual labour cost + allocated annual overhead) ÷ billable hours = cost per billable hour

cost per billable hour ÷ (1 − target margin) = client rate

Calculated by Werfvolt All derived amounts are recalculated whenever you change an assumption.

Margin is not the same as markup

Margin is measured against the selling price; markup against the cost price. A 20% margin on a €50 cost therefore requires a rate of €62.50, not €60.

Assumptions, geography and VAT

  • Geography: Belgian installation businesses; regional selection is prepared for Flanders, Brussels and Wallonia.
  • Tax basis: all client rates are shown excluding VAT.
  • Billable time and costs are business assumptions, not official averages.
  • The sensitivity analysis shows arithmetic consequences, not statistical or causal relationships.
  • The time series and unit prices show sample figures for now; official datasets will follow.
